  5.     As an ashen-faced Benazir Bhutto sat in the judge's
  6. chambers, hundreds of her supporters last week ransacked the
  7. courtroom in Lahore, where she was about to go on trial for
  8. corruption and abuse of power. Dozens of people, including
  9. police, were hurt during the two-hour riot; at one point,
  10. Bhutto was pulled into the crowd and collapsed.

  12.     Government supporters and Bhutto partisans blamed each other
  13. for inciting the violence, which postponed the hearing into
  14. charges that the former Prime Minister sold
  15. government-protected land below market rates to a London firm
  16. possibly linked to a cousin. But if the protesters' goal was
  17. to delay proceedings until after parliamentary elections are
  18. held on Oct. 24, they were disappointed. Another hearing is
  19. scheduled for this week. If Bhutto is found guilty, she will
  20. be banned from running in the October elections and
  21. disqualified from holding office for up to seven years.
